Breast MRI

ADVANCED BREAST MRI WITH CADSTREAM

Breast MRI is an exciting new technology available at Tower Imaging Valencia as part of our already comprehensive array of services.

Breast MRI tumor evaluation using intravenous contrast material has emerged as the most sensitive technique to detect invasive ductal cancer, the most common form of breast cancer. The sensitivity of breast MRI is reported to be the highest of any breast imaging test, approaching 100% for invasive breast cancer, limited by specificity. It promises to totally revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

With Phillips Achieva 1.5T MRI, Tower Imaging Valencia is able to simultaneously image both breasts in multiple planes. Detailed images of both breasts will be acquired every 60 seconds after contrast material (gadolinium) has been injected. The serial images are then analyzed by an advanced software system called CADstream that uses computed assisted diagnostic (CAD) technology to display the breast images using color mapping. With CADstream the radiologist has the ability to interactively study the anatomic and physiologic changes aiding dramatically in interpreting the massive number of images and blood flow information obtained in every breast MRI tumor study. Color mapping with CAD helps distinguish benign from malignant causes of changes in breast blood flow detectable on the serial images after the contrast material passes through the breast. It is the development of abnormal blood vessels in breast cancer (tumor angiogenesis) that results in the high sensitivity of breast MRI in finding breast cancers that often cannot be detected by mammography or physical examination.

The Tower Imaging Breast Imaging specialists are uniquely qualified experts in all aspects of breast imaging and can therefore provide the most comprehensive imaging evaluation. Studies are analyzed in light of the patient’s history, prior mammograms, and ultrasound findings. The ultimate goal of the final breast MRI report is to offer a specific recommendation that will lead to a conclusive answer for the patient.

TIV offers state-of-the-art equipment and highly experienced and trained professionals. Ultimately, our patients benefit from the most accurate recommendations and most specific diagnosis available today in breast imaging.

THE PROCEDURE

Before a Breast MRI, the patient may be prepared to receive a contrast agent through an IV in the arm. Generally, IV contrast is very safe. Be sure to tell the Technologist is you have ever had a reaction to MRI contrast or if you are particularly sensitive to medications. This contrast agent will help to “highlight” the tissues so abnormalities can be seen more clearly.

Once the IV is started, the patient lies on her stomach with both breasts resting in a cushioned recess known as the “breast coil”. The entire table the patient is lying on is advanced into the opening of the MRI machine. The patient will be asked to lie still. The examination, which usually lasts 15-25 minutes in length and the patient is usually in the exam room for about 45 minutes.

FOLLOWING A BREAST MRI EXAM

After your study is over, the images will be evaluated by one of our Board-Certified Radiologists, with expertise in MRI breast imaging. A final report will be sent to your physician who can then discuss the results with you in detail.
